Blue River Public Fishing and Hunting Area
Nine Miles Northeast of Tishomingo
Known as one of the most scenic locations in the area. Managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, the Fishing and Hunting Area covers over 3,000 acres and includes access to 6.25 miles of the picturesque Blue River – a spring-fed river well-known for its series of small waterfalls and the stocking of almost 100,000 rainbow trout when in season. Other fishing opportunities exist for black bass, crappie, as well as channel and blue catfish. Camping, swimming permitted in the Blue River Campground area. Valid Oklahoma resident or non-resident hunting, fishing license or conservation passport required of all persons entering or using the Blue River area, unless exempt.

Pennington Creek Lodge

Situated in a peaceful, natural setting along Pennington Creek directly across from the Tishomingo Municipal Golf Course. The facility’s north cabin features 10 bunk beds, with 13 in the south cabin and a cottage with two full beds. Ideal for weekend retreats, business meetings and family reunions, the lodge features a meeting room with full kitchen, game room, a covered pavilion with picnic tables, hiking trails.

Tishomingo Golf & Recreation Club

Nine-hole regulation length golf course with clubhouse on the banks of scenic Pennington Creek offering a short layout that rewards good shots and provides a fun outing for golfers of all ages. It is a daily fee golf course with an ‘Open To The Public’ guest policy. The course hosts several popular tournaments each year, including the Pennington Creek Bash, the Chickasaw Festival Tournament and the MSC

Tishomingo’s long-time favorite swimming hole on Pennington Creek, located at the old water works on the north side of town. Granite staircase waterfalls, swimming area has shallow to deep water, sandy beach, granite boulders. No swimming above the dam or jumping off pump house. No alcohol or glass bottles. No lifeguard on duty. Beware of slippery steps, underwater rocks. Please keep our beaches clean by packing out all trash.
War Memorial/Blue Angels Jet

The Johnston County War Memorial pays tribute to local residents who served in all branches of our nation’s military – in peacetime and at war. A series of granite markers honor those from Johnston County who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom. Bricks placed in the sidewalk are engraved with the names of area residents and family members who have served. Restored Blue Angels flight demonstration team jet once flown by Navy Lt. Commander Clarence O. “Smokey” Tolbert, listed MIA in Vietnam in 1972. Granite marker honoring Medal of Honor recipient and Tishomingo native Richard M. McCool, Lt., USN, for action during the Battle of Okinawa during World War II.

The trailhead to three and a half miles of some of the most scenic and peaceful hiking is located in Tishomingo’s Pennington Park. Seven separate trails weave their way through beautiful wooded areas, along Pennington Creek and by historic landmarks. Parts of the trail have educational signage of the area’s rich history. Online slide shows of historic photos are available through mobile devices accessed by a QR code. Tishomingo trails were placed with the assistance of the federal AmeriCorps program, the Veteran’s Memorial Committee, an Oklahoma Parks grant and city forces under the direction of the City Parks Commission.

Pennington Creek Park

A beautiful 15-acre park located on Pennington Creek and within walking distance of downtown Tishomingo. Playground equipment and splash pad water park for children, gazebo and pavilions for picnicking; “fitness” trail and a recently added disc golf course, fishing, overnight camping, full RV hook-ups, dump station, restrooms and shower facilities.

Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge

The Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge contains 16,464 acres of protected land managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Located near the upper Washita arm of Lake Texoma. Popular destination for hikers, photographers and bird watchers. Fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities from daylight to dark. Primitive camping, picnicking. Admission is free; tours available by appointment. Open year-round.
